How to Choose Colors by Guest Blogger Cindy Howard

Adult coloring is one of the hottest things out there right now to do and for good reason! The simple act of coloring has proven to be pain relieving (gets your mind off your pain while your coloring), stress relieving, and for some even a form of meditation. I love spending an evening at home watching a movie or playing music, and coloring in my favorite coloring book. Not only is it a relaxing, it also helps me unwind my brain from a busy day.

Out of all the coloring questions out there I think this is the one I’m asked the most. “How do you choose your colors?” I think people don’t feel very artistic and are fearful that they won’t do what it takes to color something beautiful and awesome! I tell them: IT’S COLORING! Even 4 year olds can do it. There is no wrong way to color. And just about any color combination will look good. But to actually answer this question, there’s several ways to decide on color choices.

  1. Use the colors of the rainbow .  Everyone loves rainbows!
  2. Go in blindfolded.  Meaning: just pick up a color and go. And just keep adding colors by just picking what looks right at the time.
  3. Find a color palette on the internet and go by that.  There are many sites out there that have multiple color palettes to choose from.
  4. Have someone else pick your colors. Grab a friend have them look at your picture and let them decide which colors you use.
  5. All warm or all cool. Limit your color choices to be either all warm (yellow, orange, red, pink) or all cool (blue, green, purple).
  6. I hope this helps you out with choosing colors. I’m sure there are also other ways to pick which colors you will use but I just wanted to give you a few ideas to get you started.
